Exploring the Kennet & Avon Canal

This term, Year 4 have been learning about the History of Transport in Bath and on a lovely autumnal day they got to enjoy an action-packed day to the Canal Museum in Devizes.

After journeying down the Kennet & Avon canal in a narrow boat, the children spent time in the museum and in a workshop discovering how the canal systems were built.

The children also learnt about how the canals played a vital role during the Napoleonic wars, transporting goods between Bristol and London without the need to go along the English Channel and risk falling victim to storms or French boats. They also heard about the different types of cargo that were transported: the bulky, the heavy and the fragile.

It really was a fun and educational day out and one on which all the pupils learnt a huge amount!
