2GV's Music Maker Investigation: STEM Crest Awards

2GV's Music Maker Investigation: STEM Crest Awards

As part of their science lessons, 2GV are working on the Crest Awards, a global scheme that encourages children and young people to think and behave like scientists.

The class has been exploring a variety of STEM projects each week and so far themes have included, light, and reflection and in their latest investigation the class explored sound, looking at which variable gave a higher or lower pitch.

The children worked in groups to test this using plastic, glass, and ceramic cups, filling each with an equal amount of water and stones. Pupils used a metal spoon to gently tap the cups, listening to the sound each one made. The results were fascinating!

It transpired that the pitch was higher in the glass cup, whereas the ceramic one was lower. The plastic cup variable did not work at all.
One pupil commented, "if you put your hand in the glass cup, it changes the pitch!"

The next step in the experiment was for pupils to collate their findings in groups. We saw some very intricate and colourful diagrams.

STEM learning is a great way to encourage creative thinking and develop problem-solving skills, broadening the mind, igniting a lifelong love of exploration and learning.
