James Shone inspires parents and teachers at The Paragon

On Thursday 11 October, we welcomed James Shone to The Paragon to talk to parents and staff about inspiring confidence in children in today's society.

Following a devastating life changing event which resulted in near blindness, James, determined to turn his setback into a springboard, founded the charity 'I Can and I Am' through which he promotes the philosophy that everyone can achieve, focusing on what a child (or adult) can do, rather than what they can't.

Using examples from his 16 year teaching experience, he listed ways in which people can be 'smart', demonstrating that everyone is intelligent in some way, whether emotionally, academically or physically, and asking us to ask how a child is intelligent, rather than how intelligent a child is.

A parent wrote these words in thanks:

Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to hear James Shone talk last night, we were blown away by his incredible story and very powerful messages.

James is an amazingly gifted man, so charismatic and insightful.  It was so valuable for us as parents to be able to step back from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to be reminded about the bigger picture.  We are so grateful that the Y5s and 6s also have the opportunity to listen to him and receive guidance to help maximise their potential. I am sure they benefit immensely from his talk and find his messages as inspirational as us adults!
