After months of anticipation and a year of construction, The Paragon is delighted to be approaching completion of its new classroom extension this spring. The development will provide four spacious, state-of-the-art learning spaces, thoughtfully designed to enhance the daily experience of pupils and staff.
The project began in 2021, when Nugent Vallis & Brierley Architects were commissioned to reimagine how the school’s site could better serve pupils and the wider community. The brief was ambitious: to create modern, flexible classrooms, improve accessibility, and ensure the school continues to evolve for future generations, while respecting the character and natural contours of the site. Particular care has been taken to ensure the new extension sits harmoniously alongside the school’s existing Georgian architecture, with a considered use of proportion, materials and detailing that reflects the elegance and balance of the original buildings while expressing a confident contemporary identity.
Set within the woodland environment, the building combines contemporary architectural design with a calm, uplifting atmosphere and a strong connection to nature. Large windows frame views of the surrounding trees and maximise natural light, creating a stimulating space for pupils. The flexible layout will allow the classrooms to support a variety of lessons and events across the school and can be adapted for use by the wider Bath community for activities such as holiday clubs, community events, and small-scale venue hire.
Plans are also afoot to transform existing spaces into a dedicated STEM hub. Cookery, Design and Technology, and computing will be brought together in one area, providing additional space and enhancing hands-on learning opportunities.
The Paragon continues to offer specialist teaching across its curriculum, which includes music, languages, art, games, and swimming, ensuring a broad and engaging education for every pupil.
An earlier phase of the wider development has also delivered improvements to the outdoor environment. Safe, accessible routes now run throughout the grounds and woodland, with enhanced access to play areas. Ramped pathways and inclusive outdoor facilities support accessibility across the site, while upgraded changing and hygiene areas further strengthen facilities for all pupils.
The build is being delivered by Gaiger Brothers, whose professionalism and attention to detail have been particularly valued within the busy school setting.
As Head, Mr Malcolm Bond reflects:
"This development marks an exciting new chapter for The Paragon. The new classrooms and upgraded facilities reflect our commitment to creating inspiring, future-ready spaces where children can grow, explore, and thrive. Importantly, the flexible design both indoors and outdoors will strengthen both our educational provision and our connection with the wider community.”
The new extension stands as a clear expression of the school’s ambition: to provide exceptional environments in which every child can flourish, now and for generations to come.
